PASSIEVOL OOR OUDTSHOORN!

A very successful event, namely "Fietsen voor Oudtshoorn" was held on Saturday, 16 May 2009. This took place at the
Rijnplein in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands. The weather was dry, partly cloudy with a chilly wind, but overall a
relatively pleasant day. Many interested families, friends and sponsors visited the area allocated to the 100 stationary
cycles on the Rijnplein.
150 participants cycled in shifts of 2 hours from 10h00 to 18h00 under the watchful eye and to the inspiration of the
spinning instructors of two sport gymnasiums, namely JAWI and Global Fitness. Both gymnasiums provided their own
"cycling music" which saw the cyclists through the 12 000km from Alphen aan den Rijn to Oudtshoorn.
The funds
resulting from the sponsors for this event are destined for the Centre of Hope, which is a training initiative for the less
privileged in our community, the brainchild of the Oudtshoorn Business Chamber. All 100 cycles were occupied for the
entire period and 32 cyclists cycled the entire 8 hours.
There were prizes for those cyclists who had collected the highest sponsorships with the main prize of a bicycle from the
sports shop that had won the "Best Cycle Shop of 2008" in Holland with the name "Gek van Fietsen".
Many volunteers helped with various activities to help make the event a success. One of these was the committee that
organized the entire event, consisting of Hans van Arkel, Gerard Lens, Koos Koen (Rotary, Alphen), Henk Tangerink and
people from the two gymnasiums and representatives from the cycling club, Avanti.
The financial results of this event will be sent to us at a later stage once they have been analysed, but Piet Arink has
assured us that they are very satisfied with the results.
